Mission and research areas of the EnSiEL section

Mission of the EnSiEL Section of the University of Padova is the development of methodologies for the study and analysis of the electrical system, ranging from the generation, transmission, distribution and use of electricity, to help ensure an increasingly safe, reliable, economic and sustainable management through the comprehension and representation of the complex phenomenology that determines its steady-state and dynamic behavior.

Considering the epoch-making changes taking place at national and international levels, in particular the energy transition towards an ever-increasing exploitation of renewable sources, decarbonization and the increase in energy efficiency, a multidisciplinary approach is crucial to assess the most appropriate choices and investments to face the new scientific and industrial challenges.

In this view, the Section offers a broad spectrum of complementary knowledge and skills, which include not only specific technical skills but also the strategic vision necessary to successfully address the technological and socio-economic challenges of the future, aware that electricity will play a major role in economic and social development, with increasing importance in industrial societies, due to its high flexibility and ubiquity of use.

There are many links with public and private companies, testifying the strong vocation for industrial research, as well as participation in national and international research projects.

The main areas of research are, but are not limited to, traditional and innovative systems of transmission and distribution of electricity, generation from renewable sources and impact on the grid, electrical machines and drives, power converters and related control systems, models and methods related to electrical and electronic measurements, multi-energy systems for district heating networks and smart grids, refrigeration systems and heat pumps, stationary electrochemical storage on transmission and distribution networks, economics and regulation of the energy sector, development and promotion of new energy sources, energy markets and compliance with environmental objectives of the energy sector, the energy markets and the environment.
